Frequently Asked Questions: Counselling & Assessments
We have two Registered Psychologists and a Registered Social Worker on staff who provide counselling to all ages and for a variety of presenting concerns. We can work with individuals, couples, and families. Each therapist has a slightly different theoretical orientation and style (please see ‘Our Team’ page to read more and if you have questions about us or the goodness of fit, feel free to ask our administrator(s) for their suggestions too).
Psychoeducational Assessment - Our psychoeducational assessments evaluate cognitive, academic, and social-emotional/behavioural functioning and are used to evaluate diagnoses related to learning, attention regulation, and emotional-behavioural regulation. We quote approximately 12-14 hours for these assessments, this is broken down into a 1-hour history/intake meeting, 4-5 hours of testing with the child, file reviews and consultations with parents/teachers, in addition to 6 hours of interpretation and report writing time, and a final feedback meeting to discuss the results and how best to move forward.
Gifted Assessment - Our gifted assessments evaluate cognitive functioning only, which is usually to determine eligibility for Gifted coding or admission into a charter school. We quote 5 hours for these assessments, which is broken down into a .5-hour history/intake meeting, 2 hours of testing, 2 hours of report writing, and a .5-hour feedback meeting to discuss the results.
Adult ADHD Assessment - An adult ADHD assessment (18+) uses a clinical interview and a number of questionnaires to determine the presence of ADHD. It also rules out other emotional challenges, such as anxiety or depression. Adult ADHD assessments can provide individuals with valuable information and can be shared with healthcare providers. Assessments also include educational and workplace recommendations (as needed). These assessments typically take between 2 - 4 hours (testing and report writing). If other learning concerns are present, a full psychoeducational assessment is recommended.
You do not need a referral. We have several clinics, two in Calgary (Douglasdale and Killarney), one in Airdrie, one in Edmonton and one in St. Albert. Please call the office location directly to schedule or re-schedule sessions.
We require 24 hours or one business day for the cancellation of appointments without penalty.
We require that one parent be available at all times during your child's session - younger siblings may not be left unattended in the waiting area, as there are other professionals and clients working in the surrounding offices - any noise or disturbance in the office can be disruptive to concurrent therapy sessions.
We follow the recommended fees set forth by the Psychologists' Association of Alberta.
- Counselling (Individual, Couple, Family) - $200.00/50 min hour
- Psychoeducational Assessments - $200.00/50 min hour
Billing may also occur in 10-minute increments for services done outside the therapy hour such as phone calls, writing letters, etc.
If finances are a concern please speak with us so we can discuss how to support you. Sliding scale fee options may be available.
Invoicing and processing of payments are typically done within 1 business day of the services being rendered. We accept payments in the form of e-transfer, cash, cheque, debit card, or credit card. We direct-bill some insurance companies.
The assessment will help you understand how your child learns. By completing these standardized tests, we will have a better idea of how to support your child and your family.
You will complete an intake package with a large variety of questions about your family and child. This gives me background information to better understand the results of the tests.
No! There is no pass/fail, no preparation needed. Just encourage your child to work as hard as they can.
I hope to have the report done as soon as possible; however I do get busy, I shoot for no more then 1 month.
Of course! Once I am finished, I will set up a zoom meeting with you to discuss what I have found and next steps.
Teachers are a fabulous source of information. I have a test I like to send to them to understand how your child is in their classroom, it is often drastically different then you see at home.
Generally, about 4 hours depending on how many tests we do and how long we chat for. I will ensure your child has frequent breaks and an hour for lunch.
Please ensure your child has water, snacks (for during breaks), any report cards or documents that you want addressed in the report. Comfort objects are fine as long as they are not a distraction. Please do not allow your child to bring electronics into the testing room.
It is best if I can meet with your child alone. It will ensure your child is not distracted by your presence. 10. What if I forgot something during our meeting and I feel it is important to the report? a. Not a problem! Email is best, ricki@sanostate.com but you can also give me a call (403) 307-2623, I will get back to you as soon as I can.
You get to decide who you feel should see the report. I recommend verbally discussing the report with others, as the test results can be confusing to lay people.
I prefer if the child is not present when we discuss the final report. They can often misunderstand things and I do not want them to become distressed. Should your child wish to discuss the report, I am more then happy to go over what I found in a context they will understand.
